You need an invite code to sign up. Codes are given out one by one by the team: request access here or ask on the project's Discord. Each code works once.

Don't reuse a password from your email, bank or any real account. Your password is sent once over HTTPS and stored only as a one-way hash; the team cannot read it back. Forgot it? Ask a team member for a reset code. Each sign-up attempt is noted with the user name, your network address and the time; these notes are erased after about 90 days.
